District 3 meeting – July 16, 2019
About 15 librarians and library staff attended the NCCCLA District 3 annual meeting at Surry Community College on July 16. After Surry’s VP of Academic Affairs, Dr. Jami Woods, welcomed attendees to campus, Christy Earp (Wilkes CC) delivered a talk “Etexts and Library Resources.” She described working with History faculty to incorporate public-domain and subscribed resources—whether text, image or video—into the syllabus in lieu of using a commercial textbook. While the program saved history students an estimated $60,000 in textbook costs, it also presented challenges including finding accessible translations of non-English-language primary sources, managing library budgets for patron-driven acquisition (PDA) video services, ADA compliance, and the tendency of resource providers to drop resources without notice. Christy said that she has begun to work with faculty to replace other classes’ textbooks with eTexts in courses such as Personal Health and Wellness, ENG 111 and 112, and Introduction to Psychology.
With no formal lunch program, attendees chatted over sandwiches from Mill Creek, an Amish-owned deli in Mt. Airy. After lunch, Dr. David Wright and Sebrina Mabe (Surry CC) introduced the group to the Surry County Digital Heritage project from LSTA grant assessment through a search for continuing funding. Surry County Digital Heritage endeavors to collect community histories from Surry County using primary sources. The collection includes digital scans taken from church records, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, letters, and other two-dimensional works. After a short presentation, David and Sebrina led participants on a tour of the workspace where two staff are busily scanning documents before returning the documents to their owners.

The project illustrated a variety of tools and strategies of interest to librarians: securing a grant, reaching out to communities, choosing and working with a software system and managing workflows. Although the tour of Surry’s winemaking facility was hindered by an absent tour guide, David filled in to give a brief history and overview of the N.C. Viticulture Center.
District 3 Meeting – July 25, 2018
District 3 of the North Carolina Community College Library Association met on July 25, 2018, from 9:45am to 1:15pm on the main campus of Durham Technical Community College (DTCC). The meeting was facilitated by Timothy Hunter, District 3 President. The meeting attendees enjoyed a continental breakfast along with networking. The group was welcomed by Dr. Susan Paris, Vice-President, Student Learning and Instructional Services, at Durham Technical Community College. The meeting proceeded with introductions. There were two programs during the meeting. The first program was about the North Carolina Community College System Archives presented by Jenny Thomas, information Technology Librarian, and Clark Adams, Faculty, English/Communications, from Randolph Community College. The second program was about NC LIVE’s Summon Implementation, presented by Caroline Hallam, Instruction Librarian, NC LIVE. The group enjoyed lunch provided by Jason’s Deli. The meeting ended with closing remarks.
After the programs, several librarians took a tour of the DTCC main campus library. Julie Humphrey, Library Director, discussed how weeding the reference collection allowed the library to create more seating and showed off the coffee shop that moved into the library during the fall semester of 2017. The tour also visited Durham Tech’s archives room, which dovetailed with the meeting’s first program.
